What does SOCIAL JUSTICE have to do with CLIMATE ACTION?

Join us October 17 at the monthly Socialist Unity Assembly and take part in a discussion on this topic

Speakers List:
Yvonne Hanson
Anjali Appadurai
Avi Lewis

Yvonne Hanson is a union worker and activist living in Vancouver BC. She has worked for BC's largest union for two years helping workers fight back against unfair treatment by their employers. Yvonne is a member of the SUA, DSOV, Socialist Caucus of the NDP, and Socialist Action, and has chaired and spoken at numerous webcasts and conferences over the course of the pandemic. In 2019, Yvonne ran as the NDP candidate in Vancouver Granville.

Anjali Appadurai is a passionate advocate for environmental, social and climate justice and was a 2021 NDP federal candidate for the Vancouver Granville riding. From a young age Anjali has been a passionate climate justice leader - helping to explain and clarify how capitalist economic systems of power determine wide-spread poverty, racial injustice, housing insecurity and the current climate emergency. Anjali understands the urgency for fundamental change in how we fight social and climate injustice.

Avi Lewis is a well known filmmaker, climate activist, educator, and was a 2021 NDP federal candidate for the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country riding. In 2015 Avi co-authored The Leap Manifesto and recently produced and co-wrote the Emmy-nominated animated short film, Message from the Future, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. For decades Avi has been involved in movements for economic, social and climate justice.

Many candidates for the last few elections have talked about how social justice is integral to successfully combating the climate emergency. And while all of us support social justice and all of us want to respond to the climate emergency, some might not understand the connection between the two. We have invited speakers to speak on this. Talks will be 10 minutes each and there will be a 30 min Q&A.
