Labour Working Group

Statement of Principles

The Labour Working Group believes that Democratic Socialism is impossible to achieve without Democracy in the Workplace. Exploitation of workers is the basis of capitalism, and true democracy can only come when workers control the means of production.

The goal of the Labour Group is to build a broad coalition of working people organizing for democracy not only in their workplace, but all workplaces.

We define "worker" as anyone who does labour to survive. Blue collar, white collar, unemployed, freelancers, sex workers, stay at home caregivers; we stand in solidarity with all of you.

We engage in and welcome robust debate on the necessary steps to build worker power. When supporting actions to take power back for workers, we ask 3 simple questions:

  1. Does it make the working class stronger?

  2. Does it grow worker power?

  3. Does it unite workers?

If an action does one or more of these things, the Labour Group supports it.

NEXT STEPS:

Many of our members are engaged in organizing at their own jobs, but the Labour Group is mostly focused on building solidarity and organization across industries.

At its core, Labour Organizing is simply workers talking to each other, building solidarity, and using their collective power to build a united, radical working class.

Our goal is to hold regular, accessible events where workers can meet, discuss working conditions, and share strategies to improve them. They're meant to be informal and social, focused on building solidarity & community among workers, not setting hard goals.

Unions, workers' social clubs, and solidarity networks are vital to this work. We especially encourage members of these groups to bring their experience & expertise to these meetings.

The Labour Group will meet every 2 weeks to plan these events. Our meeting time is currently the subject of hot debate. We'll settle it soon, though.
